10 World’s Largest & Fastest Animals Found in Africa

Africa is world renown for its exotic beauty, wildlife and interesting clash of cultures and is proud to be hosting the 2010 world cup in South Africa for the first time.

As we hope to win the coveted title, the continent also holds the “world cup title” for having some of the biggest, fastest and strangest species of wild creatures on the face of the earth.

Here is our list of some of the world’s top 10 largest/fastest animal species, all in Africa!!!

1. Cheetah
Location: Eastern & Southern Africa

Fact: Achieves a top speed of 76 kilometres per hour (46 miles per hour)!! It also has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h (68 mph) in three seconds – faster than most sports cars.

2. Whale Shark
Location: Mafia, Pemba, Zanzibar

Fact: This is the largest living fish species. The fish can grow up to 12.2 m (40 ft) in length and can weigh up to 13.6 tonnes (15 short tons).

3. Giraffe
Location: Eastern & Southern Africa

Fact: The giraffe is the the tallest of all land-living animal species. Its heart weighs an incredible 24 pounds and its kick is so powerful that it can decapitate a lion.

4. Ostrich
Location: Eastern & Southern Africa

Fact: The ostrich is the largest and heaviest bird in the world. This bird cannot fly and its eggs are the largest of all eggs weighing about 1.4 kilograms

5. Peregrine Falcon

Fact: Its considered to be the fastest animal on earth. In a stoop, or dive, the peregrine has been clocked at speeds of over 180 miles per hour.

6. Goliath Beetle
Location: Cameroon

Fact: Goliath beetles are some the largest insects in the world. They measure from 60–110 millimeters (2.4–4.3 in) for males & 50–80 millimeters (2.0–3.1 in) for females and can reach weights of up to 80–100 gram

7. Red Billed Queler Bird

Location: Sub saharan Africa

Facts: The Red-billed Quelea (Quelea quelea) is the world’s most abundant bird species (excluding domesticated species), with an estimated adult breeding population of 1.5 billion. They are at times called the most hated pest birds because once they land on a field of crop, nearly everything is wiped out.

8. Gorilla
Location: Uganda & Central Africa

Fact: They are the largest and most powerful living primate and are as strong as 4 to 8 strong men. The biggest WWE American wrestler is no match for this beast.

9. Goliath Frog
Location: Cameroon

Fact: The goliath frog is the largest of all frogs and can grow upto 13 inches (33 cm) in length from snout to vent, and weighs up to 8 lb (3 kg).

10. Elephant
Location: Eastern & Southern Africa

Fact: Elephants are the largest land mammals. The largest elephant recorded was one that was killed in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kilograms (26,000 lb)!! They are also considered to be some of the world’s potentially dangerous animals and can easily crush and kill any other land animal, including the rhinoceros.
