Kisumu Airport goes International

Kisumu Airport, one of Kenya’s oldest domestic airport, is to be brought to international standards at a cost of Kshs.2.6 billion. The tender is to take 22 months. Some of the renovations will include:

  • Extension of the runway by approximately 1,000m and reconstruction of the existing 2,000m runway
  • New aircraft parking apron of 40,000 sq m.
  • Construction of a new terminal building of 3,000 sq m
  • Construction of a new terminal building of 3,500 sq m vehicle parking ares and access road.
  • Construction of a new power substation, two guard houses and a tollbooth.
  • New airfield ground lighting, including approach lights,drainage and utility service works.

Kisumu Airport is located on the shores of the L. victoria to the northwest of the city. It is an ideal gateway to the new Western Kenya Tourist Circuit, which includes a wealth of little visited attractions.

Wilderness Parks in Kenya

Aberdare National Park:The parkcovers the higher areas of the Aberdare Mountain Range of central Kenya and the Aberdare Salient to their east. The park is located about 100 km north from Nairobi and stretches over a wide variety of terrains because it covers altitudes from about 7,000 feet (2,100 m) to 14,000 feet (4,300 m) above sea level. Established in May 1950, the Aberdare National Park covers an area of 766 square kilometers and forms part of the Aberdare Mountain Range.

The park contains a wide range of landscapes – from the mountain peaks that rise to 14,000 feet (4,300 m) above sea level, to their deep, v-shaped valleys intersected by streams, rivers, and waterfalls. Moorland, bamboo forests and rainforests are found at lower altitudes.Animals easily observed include the lion, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey, and sykes monkey. Rarer sightings include those of the golden cat and the bongo – an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest.

Tsavo East National Park:The park offers a vast and untapped arena of arid bush which is washed by the azure and emarald meandering of the Galana River, guarded by the limitless lava reaches of the Yatta Plateau and patrolled by some of the largest elephant herd in Kenya.

While In Tsavo East National Park is expected to see the elephants in Eden which is a sight of dust-red elephants wallowing,rolling and the spraying each other with the midnight blue waters of the palm-shaded Galana River.There is the Aruba dam located on the north bank of the seasonal Voi River, it is visited by thousands of animals and makes a great game viewing destination. The Mudanda Rock is no exception it is a whale-backed rock towers above a natural dam,which acts as a draw to hundreds of elephants.

Tsavo West National Park: The Park is a 9,000 sq km game park in southern Kenya, located about 200 km south-east of Nairobi. Separated only by the Mombasa/Nairobi road from Tsavo East, Tsavo West is part of the entire Tsavo eco-system.

Famous for the Mzima Springs, with its unique underwater hippo observatory, and for the Shaitani lava flows and Chaimu volcanic crater, the park offers plenty  of opportunity to explore on foot. In addition the park has recorded over 600 species of birds. The park also holds  an important rhino sanctuary and is famous for elephant.

Meru National Park:The park is wild and beautiful. Straddling the equator and bisected by 13 rivers and numerous mountain-fed streams, it is an especially beautiful area of Kenya. It has diverse scenery from woodlands at 3,000 feet on the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range, northeast of Mount Kenya, to wide open plains with wandering riverbanks dotted with doum palms.

Game to view includes: lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard and some of the rarer antelopes; Lesser Kudu, duiker and Dik Dik, one of Africa’s smallest antelopes. Large prides of lion can be seen and some of Kenya’s largest herds of buffalo. The rivers abound with hippo and crocodile, fishing for barbus and catfish is permitted at camp sites and along the Tana River.

Chyulu Hills National Park: Located in south east close to Tsavo West national park, Chyulu Hills is a dramatic, partly semi arid range of hills, formed by lava flows. The park is hoem to a variety of wildlife though lesser in diversity than some of the major parks in Kenya.

Healthy Travel Tips

Be prepared:get good night’s sleep before you travel, eat a light meal and take some gentle exercise before arriving at the terminal.

Dress Down:Wear lose, comfortable clothing and shoes that are not too restrictive.

Hydrate:On longer journeys low cabin humidity can cause dry eyes,nose and throat. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice(keep alcohol, tea and coffee to a minimum as these can lead to dehydration). If possible, remove contact lenses and apply skin moisturiser and lip balm.

Keep moving:Keep your circulation going by sanding up and walking in the aisle when possible. By carrying put some simple stretching exercise in your seat every few hours you will feel much fresher on arrival.Flex diffrent muscles in your feet, legs,arms,shouldersand neck. Sluggish circulation causes tiredness,muscle crampsand water retention(the cause of swollen feet). It can also result in bllod clots,which can be dangerous if they move to a vital organ.

Eat Right:Eat a light, well balanced meal before you travel and a smaller helping than usual on the aircraft. Avoid too much salt,sugar and dairy products-and also try to steeer of fizzy drinks and gaseous food. Moderate your intake of alcohol,tea and coffee,and drink a lot of water throughout the flight. Eating and drinking in excess,or consuming the wrong kinds of food,can lead to indigestion and uncomfotable bloating.

Stay focused:If you are prone to moyion sickness  dring take -off landing or in the event of turbulence,focus on a fixed objest. some believe applying pressure to your earlobes can reduce neusea.

Watch your Body Clock:When travelling across times zones your body’s sleep rhythms can become disrupted ,leading to insomnia, losss of appetite and fatigue. Prepare your body lock by getting a good night’s sleep before your flight. Try to give yourself a couple of relaxed days to adjust to new night and day cycless when you arrive. On quick trips,try to adjust your eating and sleeping patterns before laeving home.
