Speaking during the official opening of an Abasuba cultural museum at the Mfangano Islands Ms Mbarire said, “We have to diversify our tourism and include such elements as cultural tourism so that we don’t solely rely on safaris and game tourism.”
Tourism PS Rebecca Nabutola added, “We want to ensure that every region which has a product to sell gets involved in packaging and marketing its brand.”
Immigration minister Otieno Kajwang, in whose constituency the museum is situated, said his ministry will establish an immigration centre at the island to attract international tourists.
He said that countries like Dubai were raking in billions of shillings every year through tourism because they had opened up cultural sites for tourism.
The Tourism ministry has aggressively embarked on plans to make areas of the country with a rich cultural heritage potential tourist sites with the aim of creating three more tourism circuits.
