Workshop to Fine Tune Tourism Policy

Addressing industry stakeholders in Nairobi during a workshop to fine-tune the Tourism Policy and the National Tourism bills, Mr Balala said that the two documents, if enacted, will provide the legal and policy framework necessary in dealing with the challenges facing the industry. Mr Balala also said that another bill in the works, the Telecommunications Bill, was intended to facilitate the transaction of tourism business online, adding that the country must adopt current styles of doing business if it hoped to remain competitive He said tourism associations needed an overhaul for them to embrace modern business culture. “You cannot run tourism the way it was run 20, 30 years ago,” he said. He promised to consider extending grants to the Kenya Tourism Federation, which is the umbrella tourism organization, to support its safety and security programmes for tourists. The ministry also plans to create more tourism circuits in the country as a way of opening up potential tourist attraction sites in the country that remain unexploited. The three existing circuits are Mombasa, Central and Western. Tourism assistant minister Cecily Mbarire said there was a need to increase the number of circuits so as to allow both local and international tourists to enjoy the country’s rich heritage.
